How to sell ebooks and stories online in India

You no longer need a publisher to sell a book. You do still need readers, which is the part most writers skip.

Publishing is solved; readership is not

Getting a book into a sellable form is no longer the hard part. Export a PDF or EPUB, put it behind a payment link, and you are publishing. The genuine difficulty is that a finished book with no readers sells about as well as an unfinished one.

Writers who sell well almost always built readership before the book existed, usually by publishing pieces of the work in public while writing it. That is not marketing bolted on afterwards — it is what makes the launch possible.

Serialise first, collect later

Publishing chapters or stories as you write them solves several problems at once. You find out whether the work lands before you have spent a year on it, you accumulate readers who are invested in the ending, and you have something to point at when the book is ready.

Then the finished book is a genuine product rather than a repackaging: readers who followed along get the whole thing in one place, and new readers get an entry point. Serialised free, collected paid, is a pattern that has worked for a very long time.

Formats and practicalities

  • PDF is the safest default for Indian readers and the easiest to produce well.
  • EPUB is worth adding for anyone reading on an e-reader; it is a second export, not a second book.
  • Keep the file size reasonable — large downloads fail on mobile data more often than you think.
  • Put your name and a link inside the file; books get forwarded, and that forward should be able to find you.
  • Version it. Fixing a typo should not mean re-uploading a file nobody can tell apart from the old one.

Pricing fiction and non-fiction differently

Non-fiction is priced against the problem it solves, so a short, specific guide can command a surprisingly high price if the problem is expensive. A focused interview-preparation guide is worth more than its length suggests.

Fiction is priced against alternatives, and readers have a lot of cheap alternatives. That usually means a lower price and a longer tail — fiction earns through repeat readers and a back catalogue rather than a single high-value sale. Plan for the second book from the start.

The part most writers leave on the table

A reader who finishes your book is the warmest audience you will ever have, and for most writers the only available next step is "wait for the next book".

It does not have to be. Readers buy workshops, editing feedback, writing sessions and follow-up material — often at several times the price of the book itself. Selling the book from the same page as everything else you offer means that reader has somewhere to go while they still care.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sell an ebook online in India?

Export your book as a PDF or EPUB, list it as a digital product with a price in rupees, and let buyers pay over UPI or card with the file delivered automatically. No publisher or separate website is required.

Can I sell stories or serialised fiction?

Yes. Publishing chapters as you write builds readership and lets you test the work early, then the collected book becomes a product for both existing readers and new ones.

What format should I sell my book in?

PDF is the safest default and easiest to produce well. Adding EPUB is worthwhile for e-reader users and is just a second export.

How much should I charge for an ebook?

Price non-fiction against the problem it solves, which supports higher prices for short specific guides. Price fiction against readers’ cheap alternatives, and plan to earn through a back catalogue rather than one sale.

Do I need a publisher to sell a book in India?

No. You can self-publish and sell directly, keeping both the rights and the full margin minus platform and payment fees.
