What actually goes wrong from India

To be fair to Buy Me a Coffee: it works from India, creators do get paid, and for an audience based mostly in the US or Europe it remains a sensible default. The problems are specific rather than general.

They cluster around small payments. Tipping is an impulse — someone reads something good, feels briefly generous, and pays if it takes seconds. A checkout that leads with card fields when your supporter has UPI open, an amount anchored to a dollar figure they have to mentally convert, and a payout that involves a conversion step all add friction at exactly the point where friction is fatal. You rarely lose the ₹2,000 supporter to this. You lose the ₹50 one, who is most of the volume.

The alternatives worth considering

• Ko-fi — the closest like-for-like swap, and notably generous on tip fees. Still card-first, so it helps most if your audience is international.
• Patreon — the right move if what you actually want is recurring membership rather than one-off tips.
• Razorpay or Cashfree payment links — a bare UPI link works, costs least, and gives you no page, no supporter list and no messages.
• Bondin — India-first support with UPI and rupee payouts, plus the ability to sell sessions, products and articles from the same page.

A tip jar alone has a low ceiling

The uncomfortable arithmetic of tipping is that a small fraction of an audience ever tips, and those who do tip small. Creators who earn meaningfully from support almost always sell something as well.

That is the strongest argument against a standalone tipping tool, whichever one you pick. The supporter most likely to send you money is also the one most likely to book your time or buy your notes — and on a tip-only page, there is nothing for them to do next.
