The writers who earn well are rarely the best writers. They are the ones who worked out what to give away and what to charge for.
Paywall everything and you will earn nothing
The instinct on deciding to monetise writing is to gate it. It fails reliably. Nobody pays for writing by an author they have not read, and a fully paywalled archive gives a new reader no way to find out whether you are worth paying.
The pattern that works is a split. Publish enough in public that a stranger can judge your writing and decide they want more, then charge for the work that genuinely costs you something — the deep research, the full playbook, the piece that took a week.
What to give away and what to charge for
